A bold, hilarious musical journey west.

Performing in Downtown Greensboro, NC (Final Venue Details Coming Soon)
Performance Dates August 21-23 — Auditions Opening Soon

We’re bringing The Trail to Oregon! to life as Role Player’s inaugural production.

A small cast. A big story. A collaborative effort to build something meaningful from the ground up.

The Trail to Oregon! is a fast-paced, comedic musical adventure following a family journeying west.
Packed with humor, heart, and audience interaction, this show is all about storytelling, connection, and embracing the unexpected.

Audition & Rehearsal Information

Actors must be 18+

Please prepare 32 measures of a song that shows off your voice in the style of the show and bring sheet music in the correct key.
An accompanist will be provided. Auditionees may also bring recorded accompaniment; a cappella is permitted but discouraged.

The audition will include a little basic choreography, so please dress comfortably. Feel free to bring dance shoes, if you have them.

In-person audition dates (Greensboro) are May 14th (6:30pm to 9:30pm) and May 15th (6:30pm to 7:30pm) with Callbacks the 15th starting at 7:30pm! at the Cultural Center in Greensboro. (200 N Davie Street, Greensboro, Room – 415)

Virtual Submissions: Upload your audition piece to YouTube (etc), introduce yourself and your song, fill out our audition form here, and submit the link!

Rehearsals will mostly be held in High Point starting end of May/Early June

Note on Content:
Actors must be comfortable with both a “cleaner” family-friendly performance
and an “uncensored” adult version featuring coarse language and raunchier comedic themes.

Rehearsal Schedule & Expectations:
End of May through June — We will rehearse 2-3 times per week.
This allows us to focus on the music and the improv heavy beats without a “theatre crunch.”

The Home Stretch (July through August) — Rehearsals will shift into full runs and technical integration.

Tech Week — Beginning August 17th, we will have access to the performance space.
Because the nature of a limited set and time, we should be able to hit the ground running.
We will run two or three different “show endings” each night (based on time) to make sure everyone is adequately prepared!

Character Breakdown

Father

The self-appointed leader of the family, driven by love, optimism, and a deep desire to do right by the people he cares about.
He doesn’t always have the answers, but that’s never stopped him from trying.
His confidence is genuine, even when it’s misplaced, and his heart is always in the right place.
Earnest, hopeful, and just a little in over his head.
(This role also includes: “Buffalo Dad”)

Mother

The true backbone of the family.
Sharp, capable, and grounded, she sees the reality of every situation and keeps things moving forward
no matter what the trail throws at them. Where others may hesitate, she decides.
Strong-willed, practical, and absolutely essential.
(This role also includes: “Buffalo Mom”)

Daughter

A dramatic teenager seeking romance and adventure on the trail when she meets… The Bandit King!
Purposefully naive, but she quickly learns the meaning of stranger danger.
Bold and inquisitive.
(This role also includes: “Darla” & “Girl”)

Son

(Played by a woman)
A chaotic, endlessly curious 7-year-old with more questions than answers. Often lost in his own little world.
He pushes boundaries, challenges everything, and brings an unpredictable energy to every moment.
His favorite activity is skinny dipping (even if he has never tried it).
His least favorite activity is killing animals.

Grandpa/Cletus Jones

As Grandpa: He is an old, crotchety man who would rather be in Wisconsin.
He’s obsessed with the “War” and makes crude jokes until the family wishes he’d just wander off into the woods.

As Cletus Jones: He is the Bandit King’s (too) faithful sidekick.
He’s a bumbling outlaw who might just be looking for a connection that involves more than just banditry.

Tone Note

This is a high-energy, comedic musical with a strong focus on character, commitment, and storytelling.
Bold choices are encouraged.
